Petition drafting from case documents

Secretary prepares editable petition drafts from case documents and precedent notes, with focused revisions and tracked changes for legal review.

The case file provides the starting point. Secretary considers the supported documents it can read, the petition type and the side represented. It organizes the facts, claims and supporting material into a Word draft, giving the lawyer a working text to assess and develop.

Research and drafting stay connected

When the case already has a precedent research note, Secretary uses that material in preparing the petition. The note and the underlying case documents provide context for the draft. Precedent research remains a separate task; a new, full research run is not required for every petition.

Develop the point that needs more work

A lawyer may want a particular argument researched further or a section reconsidered. Secretary can focus on the selected passages and the requested issue, carry out targeted decision research and update the same Word document. Changes are recorded as tracked changes, and earlier versions are retained for comparison.

For example, a request to strengthen one disputed point can lead to a focused revision of that argument. The team can review the new material alongside the earlier wording and decide which changes belong in the final text.

An editable draft, ready for legal assessment

The Word file is saved in the case working folder, and the draft is also available in the panel. The lawyer checks the facts, sources, requests and legal reasoning, completes any necessary corrections, and decides the final content. Secretary does not sign the petition or submit it to UYAP.
